The Edgewood Centre invites health care professionals to attend a workshop on Aging and Dementia presented by neuropsychologist, Dr. Steven B. Spielman. The workshop will take place on November 16th from 4:00-6:00 pm and will focus on understanding the cognitive changes of persons with dementia and the impact on care and rehabilitation. The cost for the program is $25.00, with all proceeds donated to the Alzheimer's Association. A certificate of attendance and contact hours will be provided. The Edgewood Centre is located at 928 South Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Reservations are required - contact Edgewood by phone at (603) 436-0099 or by email.
Dr. Spielman will discuss the cognitive changes that occur with aging and the specific cognitive losses seen in the common forms of dementia (i.e., Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body disease). As part of this discussion, he will provide a detailed overview of cognition including attention, automatic vs. effortful processing, working memory and resource allocation, learning and retrieval and decision making. He will also discuss the neurobehavioral factors of inertia and insight.
Dr. Spielman will cover how these declines in cognition and executive control impact day-to-day function and the implications of these issues for care delivery and rehabilitation. This workshop is designed for professionals in the assessment, care and rehabilitation of older adults with cognitive changes and dementia, including physical, occupational, recreation and speech therapists, nurses, social workers and geriatric care managers.
