Dementia Care
The dementia care program at The Edgewood Centre is designed to enhance the quality of life of residents living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.
Our goal is always to maximize independence, ensure dignity, and provide steady support for families. With over 30 years of experience in dementia care, we are prepared to support the changing physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people dealing with any stage of Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.
A Waterfront Home In a Great Neighborhood
Environmental adaptations, both inside the building and on the grounds, encourage freedom of mobility and maximize the opportunity to enjoy fresh air and sunshine.
Residents can dine on waterfront porches and decks, stroll in a handicapped accessible courtyard area, and enjoy activities in an atrium overlooking a pristine wildlife pond. Children from Edgewood’s on-site early learning center visit often – bringing healthy doses of smiles and laughter to the residents of our dementia care program.
Care For The Mind, Body, and Spirit
A specialized team of activities professionals creates programs that provide opportunities for the creativity, self-expression, and camaraderie that are part of a meaningful and joy-filled life.
The recreational programming at Edgewood is fully individualized and varies with the cognitive ability and social preferences of each resident in our dementia care program.
Some residents look forward to bus outings for scenic rides along the New Hampshire coast while others enjoy the chance to sing along with live musical entertainment. Other residents prefer one-on-one interactions or soothing movement therapy programs. At Edgewood, the focus is on providing residents with a variety of activities to suit any interest and ability.
Expertise and Education
Edgewood trains and employs dementia specialists. Staff in all departments are carefully selected and offered 8 additional hours of training in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. This program, exclusive to Edgewood, was developed in conjuction with experts from the Copper Ridge Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and covers everything from dining well to encouraging independence. In short, Edgewood staff have the tools they need to ensure that residents’ psychosocial and medical needs are met promptly and skillfully, twenty four hours a day.
Our staff work consistently in our dementia care community with the same residents every day, ensuring familiar faces are there to help…with creativity and understanding. For an example of that level of care, read about Charlene Blaisdell, one of Edgewood’s excellent dementia care LNAs.
Support from on-site social work staff and outside consultants provide resident families with help navigating the challenges that can come with caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.
Honoring the Whole Person
The staff people of Edgewood’s dementia care program take pride in a compassionate approach to dementia care. We know that people living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia live in the moment and while many losses can occur through the course of the disease, one’s personhood remains intact.
Consistent with the culture change movement in health care, our care is resident-driven and resident-centered. At The Edgewood Centre, it is our mission to nurture and celebrate the wholeness of our residents during each moment of their life.
