Short Stay Rehab
Post-hospital, post-acute, or short stay rehabilitative care is designed to improve a person’s transition back home following surgery, illness or injury. Short stay rehab residents no longer need the acute care setting of a hospital but still require a high level of clinical and rehabilitative care to ensure a speedy recovery.
Selecting a short stay rehab or post-acute provider is a critically important decision as the clinical team can significantly impact the success of treatment. It’s important to choose a short stay rehab program with a demonstrated track record of success and a proven commitment to clinical excellence and resident-driven care.
The short stay rehabilitation program at The Edgewood Centre is designed for people eager to return to their independent lifestyle following surgery – the average length of stay for a short-term rehab resident at Edgewood is only 21 days.
The goal of the program is to provide the highest level of rehabilitation and skilled nursing care to residents while facilitating the transition, as quickly and safely as possible, from hospital to home.
A History of Individual Success Stories

Cardiac Rehab
Interdisciplinary expertise in Edgewood’s cardiac care program integrates rehabilitation, nursing, nutritional management, medical care, and discharge planning. The team successfully treats residents with cardiovascular diagnoses such as vascular disorders and congestive heart failure, as well as post-cardiac surgery needs.
Short stay residents can rest assured that the cardiac rehab program begun at the hospital is continued with the same level of professional expertise and care. Edgewood’s cardiac rehab program is highly regarded in the medical community, and Edgewood works with all cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists in the Maine and New Hampshire Seacoast area.
Orthopedic Rehab
The orthopedic rehab program at The Edgewood Centre focuses on restoring musculoskeletal function in individuals following joint replacements, fractures, amputations and back injuries.
A team of nurses, physical and occupational therapists, physicians and discharge planners work together to assess resident needs and develop individualized plans of care geared to achieve the goals of the short stay orthopedic resident.
Neurological Rehab
Edgewood’s short stay neuro rehab program is for people with spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, stroke-related deficits, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or other neurological impairments.
The short stay rehab team is committed to helping residents regain the highest level of functional independence, mobility and communication.
Family Involvement
At The Edgewood Centre, we realize that a key component of a resident’s success in attaining their goal to return home is the involvement of their family.
To help promote recovery, Edgewood makes it easy for family to be part of the rehab process. There are no set visiting hours so family and friends may come in anytime to enjoy an activity with a short stay resident, provide support and encouragement or join a resident for a meal, free of charge.
Resident care and discharge planning meetings, which family may attend with the resident’s permission, offer an opportunity for the rehab, nursing and social service teams to assist with insurance questions, discharge planning, and the arrangement of home care services. In addition, a licensed therapist will do a home safety assessment and provide suggestions and educational materials to help manage a safe transition home after a stay at Edgewood for post-acute rehab.
Payment Options
Edgewood’s short stay rehab program is Medicare-certified.
In addition, Edgewood works with most managed care and commercial insurance programs, including Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, most Medicare replacement plans, and Martin’s Point.
Whatever your payment source, Edgewood is committed to getting you back on your feet and home as soon as possible.
